Carver has admitted that the Newcastle players are in much better spirits than they have been recently, following a draw with West Brom.
Speaking to the Chronicle, Carver has admitted that the atmosphere in the Newcastle dressing room is far improved from what it was just last week.
The interim head coach said: “It’s about a million times better. They weren’t beaten 3-0 and they halted that run of performances.”
After the 3-0 defeat at the hands of Leicester last week, which was their eight in a row, the mental situation at St James’ Park seemed to reach a new low. Carver suggested that Mike Williamson had got himself sent off on purpose, whilst Fabricio Coloccini ended up penning an open letter to the Magpies fans to ask for their continual support.
The on-pitch performances were devoid of any sort of fight, and as the club teeter increasingly close to the relegation places, any chance of survival looked impossible.
However, the 1-1 draw with West Bmom, courtesy of Ayoze Perez’s classy strike, showed a different Newcastle - one that had spirit and a team cohesion absent in recent weeks.
It may have only been a point gained, but the promising signs were there heading into the final two games of the season. Newcastle surely need to win one more game to ensure their survival, and with continual performances of this quality, it is hard to see how they would not achieve such a feat.
