Report: Stoke City targeting new goalkeeper in Jakob Haugaard

Stoke currently have Asmir Begovic and Jack Butland at the club with Thomas Sorensen set for retirement.

Stoke City are interested in signing a new goalkeeper in the form of FC Midtjylland's Jakob Haugaard according to a report in the Stoke Sentinel.

The report they are looking for a new goalkeeper will inevitably fuel speculation over the future of Asmir Begovic during the summer, with the Bosnian linked with a move away from the Potters to clubs such as Liverpool, Tottenham and Inter Milan who have been linked with a move for highly-rated stopper by the likes of the Express

Jack Butland who is another highly rated goalkeeper is currently the man between the posts and another goalkeeper arriving could curtail his game time.

Haugaard is only 23 so his best years are ahead of him and a £600,000 deal is reportedly expected to be concluded in the summer. There may still be room for the other two goalkeepers at the club as Thomas Sorensen is expected to retire at the end of the season.

The Dane has experience of European football having twice played in the Europa League while making 18 league appearances for the side this season.

Whether he is prepared to play second fiddle to any of the goalkeepers already at the Britannia Stadium remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see just how much game time he gets if the deal reaches a successful conclusion.

There is still plenty of development left in Haugaard, so one wonders what specific role within the squad Mark Hughes has in mind for him.
