Eljero Elia: Southampton have not been giving 100% at start of games recently

Southampton have been struggling for form recently, with Europa League qualification chances looking slim.

Southampton winger Eljero Elia has told the Southern Daily Echo that his side are not giving 100% in the early stages of matches at the moment.

The Saints have been in poor form of late and Elia thinks that their slow starts have been part of the reason for this.

The Dutch attacker believes that Southampton are not laying their marker down early and that is putting them on the backfoot for the rest of the match.

“The first thing, we are not like going 100 per cent in the duels and then we lose the duels first 20 minutes, and after that we won the duels and we make the game, but we cannot create 100 per cent chances – only shoot from distance – and we cannot [get] through to be dangerous in front of them.”

Elia's statement seems to ring true as the side have conceded early against Sunderland and Leicester City in their last two fixtures.

The South Coast club have lost both these games and it means that their chances of qualifying for Europe now look slim.

Southampton have been competing in the upper echelons of the Premier League table all season, but they look likely to fall at the final hurdle.

Their season has still been a very encouraging one, though, and with a few additions over the summer, Southampton should be back challenging for a European spot again next season.
