HITC Sport understands former Wolves and Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders is in the frame to replace Paul Cook at Chesterfield.
HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that former Liverpool and Wales international striker Dean Saunders is a contender for the Chesterfield manager's job should Paul Cook leave for Portsmouth.
Cook is expected to trade Chesterfield for Portsmouth after the Fratton Park outfit made an approach for the 48-year-old to replace Andy Awford who was sacked by Portsmouth last month.
Cook is believed to be keen on a move to Portsmouth and the two clubs are trying to sort out a compensation package to allow the Scouser to join the League Two club.
Saunders is currently interim manager at Crawley Town after stepping into the helm in December when John Gregory stepped down in order to undergo major heart surgery.
50-year-old Saunders was unable to stop Crawley from suffering relegation from League One and he is set for talks over his long-term future with the club who have opted to part company with Gregory who was initially expected to return this summer after recovering from his heart surgery.
Chesterfield finished sixth in League One and booked a place in the play-offs, but they were beaten emphatically by Preston.
