Barcelona Champions League winner Ludovic Giuly scores Beckham-esque goal

Barcelona Goal

Ludovic Giuly, who now plays for Monts d’Or Azergues in the French fourth tier, has become a YouTube hit once again after scoring a wonder goal.

As Barcelona prepare to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals, a former Catalan favourite who played a major part in one of their European Cup successes has been busy scoring a contender for Goal of the Season in France.

Ludovic Giuly played the entirety of Barca’s 2-1 victory over Arsenal in Paris back in 2006, but is probably best remembered for the superb goal he scored in the semi-finals.

Facing off against Champions League specialists AC Milan in the last four that season, the Frenchman scored the only goal of the tie after a delightful lofted pass from teammate Ronaldinho.

To this day, it is regarded as one of the finest goals in the history of the competition, and while Giuly won silverware with Monaco, Roma and PSG during a busy career, he would never score a goal of the same quality again.

That is, until now.

Still playing the game at the ripe of age of 38, Giuly is the current captain of Championnat de France amateur Group B side Monts d’Or Azergues Foot.

Playing in the aptly named Stade Ludovic Giuly, it’s fair to say that the Frenchman is enjoying something of a swansong in his homeland.

In fact, he’s enjoying quite the run in front of goal, having scored five in his last four outings for the French minnows.

That haul includes a hat-trick in their most recent outing against Villefranche, with the undoubted highlight being a sensational finish from close to the halfway line that had shades of David Beckham’s iconic goal for Manchester United against Wimbledon.

While his goal for Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals all those years ago remains a thing of beauty, we could happily watch his latest effort again and again and again...
