Alan Shearer has suggested in The Sun that he would be surprised if Newcastle United suffer relegation from the Premier League.
The Newcastle legend made the comments following the Magpies’ 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
It was the first time in nine league games that John Carver’s side had picked up a point, and it has given them a fighting chance of avoiding the drop to the Championship at the end of the season.
The Magpies are 17th in the Premier League table at the moment with 36 points from as many matches, just two points above Hull City, who are currently third from bottom in the standings.
Former Newcastle striker Shearer believes that Carver’s side have done enough to retain their Premier League status for the 2015-16 campaign.
“If Newcastle cannot manage to stay up now then they really will deserve to go down,” the 44-year-old wrote in The Sun.
“But Newcastle face a QPR side already down, one who simply rolled over at the Etihad yesterday,” added Shearer.
“Then it is a West Ham side with nothing left to play for and struggling to find a goal. If Newcastle manage to manufacture relegation from this then I really will despair.”
Newcastle have their destiny in their own hards, and it is really hard to see them lose both of their remaining games after the draw with West Brom.
Queens Park Rangers are already relegated, while West Ham United’s season is virtually over.
If Newcastle can pick up maximum points against QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday, then they should be able to heave a sigh of relief.
