Tottenham Hotspur supporters were disappointed with a man who is supposed to be the club's most senior defender.
Mauricio Pochettino fielded a strange back four against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon. Even if injuries forced the Totenham boss to select that particular quartet, the order in which he picked them was questionable.
The north London side duly paid the price. Eric Dier, who has mostly impressed this season, had one of his bad days. Vlad Chiriches was awful, getting himself sent off in what could potentially be his last Tottenham game (if their transfer activity will be dictated by player performances). Federico Fazio was better than he has been at times this campaign but still didn't look good enough.
The biggest disappointment for many against Stoke, however, was Jan Vertonghen.
Dier is young, Fazio is new this season and Chiriches has lacked game time. What was the Belgian's excuse?
Vertonghen was all at sea against the Potters and provided the assist for Charlie Adam's opener with a terrible header. Granted, he was out of position - but the 28-year-old is supposed to be able to play at left-back.
In response on Twitter, several Tottenham fans expressed their frustration with the defender and even suggested there would be no opposition to a Vertonghen sale this summer. Here's a selection of what supporters were saying on social media after the 3-0 loss to Stoke:
Not sure what was worse, Vertonghen's attempted clearance or the overall defense.. #THFC— West Coast Spurs (@WestCoast_Spurs) May 9, 2015
Beautiful assist by Vertonghen there. Calamitous defending all around #thfc— Georg Kjøll (@faktakjekk) May 9, 2015
Vertonghen?chiriches?kaboul? Wouldn't be upset if either were sold. 5th worst defence in the league....51goals in 35(and a bit) games #Thfc— Danny Jacklyn (@DcJacklyn) May 9, 2015
Vlad, Soldado, Vertonghen, Fazio, Ade, Paulinho, Davies & Walker need to be put in lucky bin for £1 & hopefully someone will take them #THFC— Luis Cupertino (@LuisCupertino) May 9, 2015
Vertonghen with his "ego" to want to play for a "bigger club" take a look at your defending for that 1st goal, absolutely diabolical. #THFC— Ricky Sacks (@GlobalSpur) May 9, 2015
I'll tell you who has annoyed me this season. Jan Vertonghen. He's basically an actor pretending to be a footballer in a Gillette advert.— Gentleman Hotspur (@Gentleman_THFC) May 9, 2015
Vertonghen has done an outstanding job convincing people he's a world class defender.— Steven. (@StevenLDN) May 9, 2015
