Report: West Ham open talks to sign Liverpool's Glen Johnson on a free transfer

West Ham Upton Park

Could a former West Ham United defender be heading back to Upton Park?

According to a report in the Sunday People, West Ham United have started negotiations with Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson about the possibility of bringing the player back to Upton Park.

The 30-year-old is out of contract this summer and will be leaving Anfield for pastures new, and with West Ham’s current first-choice right-back set to move back to his parent-club Arsenal, Johnson could be the perfect alternative.

The England international played 16 times for West Ham before completing a move to Chelsea, but it was at Liverpool where he really found his feet, making 199 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing 20 assists in that time.

This season he has continued to play relatively regularly for Brendan Rodgers’ side, featuring 27 times to date, but with his future seemingly elsewhere, could he head back to London?

The report claims West Ham are confident of sealing a deal for Johnson on a free transfer having begun negotiations early.
