Report: Manchester United bid £18m for Nathaniel Clyne; talks advancing

Could Manchester United follow up the deal to sign Memphis Depay with a move for a Southampton defender?

According to a report in the Sunday Times, Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton.

The report claims Louis van Gaal’s side have made an increased bid of £18million for the 24-year-old right-back who could become United’s second transfer following the deal that will see Memphis Depay arrive at Old Trafford in June (subject to a medical).

Clyne has played 39 times for Southampton this season and 102 times since signing from Crystal Palace.

With doubts remaining over the long-term future of fellow right-back Rafael, it would be no surprise if United did move for a player in that position this summer.

Van Gaal also has the likes of Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones who can play at right-back if required, but a club of United’s stature should have a player who is natural in that role and Clyne has become one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers.

If he did arrive at United he would be the second Saints full-back to sign in quick succession, following Luke Shaw’s big-money move last summer.
