Ex-Liverpool stopper Pepe Reina sent off in Bayern Munich loss

The Spanish goalkeeper was dismissed after only 13 minutes of the Bavarian club’s 1-0 home defeat to Augsburg.

Bayern Munich’s potential for a momentous treble has seemingly slipped away in recent weeks, with the Bavarian side looking set to have to make do with just the Bundesliga title.

The Allianz Arena outfit were eliminated from the DFB Pokal by Borussia Dortmund recently, while a 3-0 humbling at Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek leaves their European hopes in tatters.

To compound matters further, Pep Guardiola’s men suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Augsburg yesterday.

The Spanish coach made a raft of changes to his first team with the second leg against Barca in mind, with former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina getting a rare start in place of Manuel Neuer.

However, in only his third Bundesliga outfit for the Bavarian giants, Reina was given a straight red card in the 13th minute and conceded a penalty after bringing down Raul Bobadilla in the box.

Although the visitors missed the resultant spot kick, they went on to win the clash 1-0, as Bobadilla struck in the 71st minute.

Reina will have to wait until next season for any more action and will be frustrated given the fact that he has had to spend the majority of the campaign watching on from the sidelines.
