19-goal Celtic star Leigh Griffiths discusses previous struggles

The Scotland international has been in great form recently for Celtic.

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has been in great form in recent weeks. The Scotland international has netted 19 goals in 38 appearances this season - with nine of those goals coming in his last eight games.

Of course, it did not always look like he was going to be a hit at Celtic Park.

After his arrival in January 2014 he struggled for regular football, despite his obvious talent. He was also making headlines off the pitch for all the wrong reasons. The 24-year-old had previously found himself in trouble for off-field actions whilst at Hibernian on loan from Wolves and also got himself in trouble early in his Celtic career.

He admitted that in his early struggles at the club, he would go home angry, in an interview with The Telegraph:

“The league’s won now and I’ve put myself forward for the Scotland camp that’s coming up and then I’ll go away and enjoy my summer – but not the way I did last season – and I’ll come back raring to go.

“I was going home angry, disappointed and hurt at not playing. The family said the only way to change it was to work even harder. My kids [Layla, Kacie, Rhys and Jacob] were getting upset that I wasn’t playing.

“They like seeing me on the pitch scoring goals. When they asked why I wasn’t playing it was hard to give them an answer, but since the turn of the year they’ve enjoyed coming back to games and seeing me score goals.

“This is the most settled I’ve felt. I started my Celtic career well but last summer when I came back I wasn’t as fit as I should have been and maybe that’s why the manager didn’t play me."

His form since the turn of the year has been exceptional and there is no doubt that Ronny Deila has worked wonders on the striker. Griffiths is in the shape of his career and perhaps the best form.

Next season he will hope to be the lead striker at the club, as they look to conquer Scotland once again, as well as having a good run in the Champions League.
