Rangers have defeated Queen of the South 2-1 away from home in the first leg of the Scottish Premiership playoff quarter-final tie.

Newcastle United-owned attacking midfielder Haris Vuckic came close to scoring for the visiting team at Palmerston Park in Dumfries in the ninth minute, before his teammate Dean Shiels saw his attempt from close range saved.

Mark Durnan had two chances in quick succession for Queens thereafter, before Andy Murdoch came close for Rangers.

The Gers eventually took the lead in the 44th minute when Steven Smith found the target with a left-footed free kick.

Stephen McKenna had a chance for the hosts in the opening minutes of the second half, and just moments later Rangers’ Nicky Law saw an attempt saved.

Derek Lyle restored parity for the Doonhamers in the 64th minute with a header from close range, but it was Rangers who were celebrating at the end of the game due to Shiels’s headed winner from a Richard Foster delivery in the 75th minute.
