Middlesbrough took a step closer to gaining promotion to the Premier League on Friday evening, as they got the better of Brentford away from home in the first leg of the Championship semi-final playoff.
Brentford would have been many Championship football followers’ favourites to win the match at Griffin Park, but it was Boro who went away with the win.
Aitor Karanka’s side took the lead in the 26th minute when Jelle Vossen headed Adam Clayton's cross into the corner.
Andre Gray restored parity for hosts Brentford when he robbed goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos on the edge of his penalty area and tucked the ball home.
However, Middlesbrough had the last laugh, as Fulham-owned central defender Fernando Amorebieta struck home what proved to be the winning goal in the encounter in injury time.
The 2-1 win at Griffin Park means that Boro are now favourites to progress to the Championship playoff final at the expense of Brentford.
Following the win, Chelsea-owned forward Patrick Bamford, defender Ben Gibson and attacker Lee Tomlin took to social networking site Twitter to revel in the success.
Only half time but great first result. Always a tough place to go. Safe journey home to all the fans. #UTB— Patrick Bamford (@Patrick_Bamford) May 8, 2015
It's only half time nothing is done ... Pack the riverside out for next week and get behind the boys ... If there was ever a time to get— Ben Gibson (@bengibson1993) May 8, 2015
