Mauricio Pochettino says sorry to Tottenham Hotspur fans after 'sad' performance

Tottenham were sunk by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur were dealt an embarrassing defeat today by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

Goals from Charlie Adam, Steven Nzonzi and Mame Buram Diouf did the trick for the Potters, against a Spurs side who also had Vlad Chiriches sent off.

Tottenham were abject in their defeat today and certainly deserved to be beaten so comfortably.

Mauricio Pochettino was not pleased with the result and he apologised to fans who made the trip to Stoke this afternoon to watch perhaps the team's worst performance of the season.

He is quoted by the official Tottenham website as stating:

“We conceded two goals and after that, it was difficult to come back into the game and when Vlad got the red card, it was even harder.

“We showed spirit with 10 men but it was too late. We need to show that from the beginning of the game, not react when we’re already down. That was our mistake.

“We’re also disappointed for all the fans who came here to support us, they deserve more and for that reason, we’re all sad.”

The performance from Tottenham was extremely poor. They played like a team who were comfortably looking forward to the end of the season and putting their feet up on a beach somewhere, not one looking to press on in the Premier League.

The defence was shocking throughout, with Chiriches' late inclusion in the side an indicator of the players they had to put out on the pitch.

What this game proves is that Tottenham need to buy in the summer, with the defence just one area that requires wholesale changes.
