At half-time on Saturday afternoon, both Tottenham and Southampton trailed by two goals.
Mauricio Pochettino's men came up against a dominant Stoke City side who completely bossed the first half. Defensive errors didn't help the north London side's cause and, with respect to the Potters, Tottenham supporters may have expected better against a side like Stoke when they are supposed to trouble the top four or at least six this term.
Southampton, meanwhile, faced a similar situation at Leicester City. Such is the Foxes' recent form, Nigel Pearson's men blew the Saints away in the first half.
But former Tottenham striker and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker offered a humorous theory up on Twitter that both sides were losing on purpose!
Both Spurs and Southampton's managers have spoken of the difficulties of the Europa League lately, although the South Coast side would surely welcome a venture into Europe.
It would no doubt affect their Premier League campaign, though, just as it has Tottenham's for a number of years.
Lineker's cheeky tweet is apt, then, and possibly offers a silver lining for two out-of-form teams.
