Sunderland won a much-needed three points at Goodison Park this weekend.
Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has had his say on Sunderland’s victory, hailing it as “sensational” on Twitter and suggesting that it is now squeaky-bum-time for those sides battling to avoid relegation.
It was a match Sunderland simply had to win, and they did just that, defeating a resurgent Toffees side 2-0 at Goodison Park.
Roberto Martinez’s side had only recently trounced Manchester United on that very ground, but it was the Black Cats who came out on top and did their hopes of remaining in the top flight for another year no harm at all.
Sunderland went into the match in the bottom three, but a victory that came courtesy of goals from Danny Graham and Jermain Defoe lifted them up to 14th directly after the final whistle.
The result was one Lineker felt the need to hail, and rightly too given how important it was in Sunderland’s season.
They still have work to do, but Dick Advocaat’s side will have had a huge confidence boost, and in turn caused more than a few jitters among the sides around them.
That is a sensational result for Sunderland. *heightened squeak from many an anus.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 9, 2015
