Joe Maguire and Connor Randall: Liverpool's potential full-backs of the future

Taking a closer look at two teenage full-backs who could soon be pushing for a first-team chance at Liverpool.

Liverpool have a number of promising young players coming through the ranks at Anfield right now, but while Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent, Sheyi Ojo et al have generated plenty of headlines, there are two talented full-backs who could also be knocking on Brendan Rodgers’ door sooner rather than later.

Joe Maguire and Connor Randall are both 19-year-old defenders, the former occupying the left side and the latter playing from the right.

Much has been said about the current crop of senior Liverpool full-backs at Rodgers’ disposal, with some performing significantly better than others. So what chance the two teenagers tasting senior action as early as next season?

With the Capital One Cup often the perfect chance for Premier League managers to give their younger players a chance, it would be no surprise if Maguire, Randall or both had a run-out sooner rather than later.

With Glen Johnson’s contract coming to an end, Jon Flanagan continuing to suffer with injuries and Javier Manquillo’s loan move not going according to plan, it could be right-back Randall who has the better opportunity, and his 23 appearances for Liverpool’s under-21 have certainly shown what a talent he could become – and a versatile one at that with him also turning out at centre-back and on the right wing.

As for Maguire, he can also play in the centre of defence if needed, but he could have an intriguing battle with Alberto Moreno in the years ahead.
