As election fever kept the country up all night, the race was on to be the first with the results, and Sunderland recorded yet another derby win.
As the battle to be the first constituency to declare their results hotted up, it emerged that the collective wards in the Sunderland and Newcastle areas were battling it out to declare the winners before anybody else. The forecast was expecting Sunderland to declare first at around 10.40pm, and some media personalities were quick to draw some parallels with the football world.
Match Of The Day presenter Gary Lineker was among the first to get involved:
The Sunderland folk like to go home early....rather like at the Stadium of Light.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 7, 2015
Sunderland won the race in the end and had declared three constituency results before any other area in the UK, so BBC's Dan walker couldn't resist:
Great 1st half from Sunderland so far. They are 3-0 up here! #GE2015— Dan Walker (@mrdanwalker) May 7, 2015
After it was clear that Sunderland had been first to the post again, Twitter users were quick to rub the salt in the wounds for Newcastle, who are in the middle of a run of eight straight defeats in the Premier League and have lost the last five derbies with Sunderland. Even some Newcastle fans couldn't help but wallow in some gallows humour:
"Newcastle have tried really hard this time around to beat Sunderland" WE ARE AWFUL AT EVERYTHING.— Jonny Gabriel (@JonnyGabriel) May 7, 2015
"Newcastle has tried really hard to beat Sunderland this time..." Never mind, lads, eh? #6inarow— Jonathan Wilson (@jonawils) May 7, 2015
Big fan of Newcastle not being able to beat Sunderland at anything.— Out With Gout '88 (@Walshie409) May 7, 2015
