Indeed, Savage sees the same lack of spirit displayed in the Newcastle team's body language that he did in the Derby side he himself was a part of several years ago.
The Welshman said: "The Newcastle players' body language is as bad as that of the Derby side I played in that got relegated from the Premier League in 2008 with just 11 points.
"[Fabricio] Coloccini has been a good servant to the club but, right now, they don't need public apologies and pathetic, flowery letters from their captain."
He's often way out but, here, Savage appears bang on the money.
Not that it's difficult to see the lack of heart and atmosphere at Newcastle United right now. They aren't helped by a manager in John Carver who, after eight defeats in a row, says he is the best coach in the Premier League.
But Carver appears to just do what he wants at St James' Park. He obviously doesn't want to win.
And the same can be said of the players, while the Newcastle hierarchy simply appear to be happy with what's gone on this season on Tyneside. Astounding.
Funnily enough, the current Derby County side also saw an alarming slide towards the end of their season. Speculation linking Steve McClaren with the Newcastle job certainly didn't help.
