Marcel Brands has given his clearest indication yet that the PSV captain is simply not for sale.
PSV Eindhoven sporting director Marcel Brands has had a busy week. Yesterday he completed brokering a deal that will see Memphis Depay, one of the most wanted footballers in Europe, join Manchester United in the summer.
Now he has spoken to Sky Sports about the future of Georginio Wijnaldum. The PSV captain, who has been linked with Liverpool and Newcastle United, is said to not be for sale.
“We have not had any contact with Liverpool about Wijnaldum.
“We hope to keep the rest of the team together now because we are playing in the Champions League next season. I hope we don’t have to sell any other players.”
It was reported last week that Newcastle United were indeed keen on the Dutch international. It was claimed by The Chronicle that Newcastle wanted the 24-year-old, who played and scored at the World Cup last summer.
He can play across the midfield and would of course have Dutch company. Newcastle already have the likes of international team-mates Daryl Janmaat, Tim Krul and Siem De Jong in their ranks, as well as Vurnon Anita, and that would help Wijnaldum fit in, were he to make this move.
Liverpool meanwhile, who were also linked with Depay, were linked to Wijnaldum by The Metro back in January.
He has been in great form this campaign, scoring 15 goals in 38 appearances from the midfield as he helped PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title.
But despite the reported interest PSV seem to be fairly confident of holding on to their player.
