Paul Scholes has predicted in The Independent that Memphis Depay will prove to be a good signing for Manchester United.
The 21-year-old Netherlands international winger will officially move to the Premier League outfit from Dutch champions PSV in the summer transfer window.
On Thursday, United announced that a deal has been reached with PSV on their official website in a statement which read: “Manchester United has reached agreement with PSV Eindhoven and Memphis Depay for the player's transfer, subject to a medical, once the transfer window opens in June.”
Former United midfielder Scholes is delighted to see the Red Devils snap up the highly-rated 21-year-old and has explained how the youngster is going to make them a better team next season.
“It was encouraging from Manchester United’s point of view that they have made the signing of Memphis Depay at such an early stage,” the 40-year-old wrote in The Independent.
“He has pace, which has always been a feature of great United teams, and has been badly lacking this season at times.
“He has scored 21 goals for PSV Eindhoven this season and is the Dutch league’s top goalscorer, which is a good sign. If he can have anything like the kind of impact Ruud van Nistelrooy made, he will be a great success.”
Could Paul Scholes’s prediction come true?
Depay is one of the best young players in Europe and has been truly sensational for PSV this season.
In 28 Eredivisie appearances for PSV this campaign, the 21-year-old has scored 21 goals and created 56 chances, while having a pass accuracy of 74% and a shot accuracy of 46%. Depay has won eight headers, 77 dribbles and 20 tackles.
Having worked with United manager Louis van Gaal at the Netherlands national team, Depay knows what to expect from his compatriot when he joins up with him at Old Trafford in the summer.
The key will be making a strong start to the season. If Depay does well in the opening weeks of the 2015-16 campaign, then his confidence will increase and he will play even better.
