Bale joined Real Madrid from Tottenham in the summer of 2013, while Neymar moved to Barcelona from Brazilian giants Santos in the same year.
Wales international winger Bale had a good debut season at the Santiago Bernabeu despite his injury problems, but this campaign the 25-year-old has struggled to perform well consistently.
In contrast, Neymar has been superb this campaign and is widely acknowledged as one of the best players in the world.
Former Arsenal star Keown has drawn a similarity between Bale and Neymar, highlighting how the former plays under the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo and the latter under that of Lionel Messi.
“If you compare him with Neymar, they are in similar situations,” the 48-year-old wrote in The Daily Mail. “But Neymar is still finding room for brilliance despite being in Messi’s shadow.
“Bale seems to struggle more alongside Ronaldo. He’s got to be confident enough to be more selfish.”
Bale’s struggles may not actually have much to with the presence of Ronaldo. Perhaps the former Tottenham star is simply not good enough.
True, last season the Welshman scored in the finals of the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, but he has failed to step up this campaign.
When Ronaldo was injured, Bale failed to ‘replace’ him in the team and raise his game. True, there have been injuries for the former Southampton star, but great players always overcome such problems.
Perhaps Bale is not great, not yet anyway.
