Speaking to the Evening Times, former striker Johnstone has outlined his desire to see Stuart McCall select the same back four against Queen of the South as he did against Hearts.
Johnstone said: “I said it in these pages last week, the best Rangers centre backs are Darren McGregor and Marius Zaliukas without a shadow of a doubt. The way Foster played I would stick him in there at right back again. Lee Wallace is obviously a shoe-in at left back.”
The Gers had taken a two-goal lead against Hearts last weekend, before Genero Zeefuik entered the fray and created some real problems in the heart of their defence.
His height and physicality was too much to handle, and as good as the Light Blues back lined had been prior to his arrival on the pitch, they collapse under the pressure of a new style of play.
Hearts pumped the ball long to Zeefuik, and they went on to score twice and tie the game.
However, the defence looked solid, and the same back-line will likely have a much stronger game against Queen of the South than they did against Hearts.
The play-off contenders lack the physicality of Hearts, and their desire to play football on the ground and pass the all through the middle will play perfectly into Stuart McCall’s hands.
All McCall has to do is guarantee that his midfield are at the top of their game, and the selection of the same back-line should snuff out any potential danger to give Rangers the play-off advantage at Palmerston.
