Shearer has full faith the Newcastle fans will stick by their club.
He said: “I was surprised that Coloccini had written the letter to the fans, asking them to stick with the team, because I think the one thing that is pretty much guaranteed in Newcastle is that the fans will turn up and support.
“For a player to come out and ask the fans to still support them, I was a bit taken aback and disappointed in that, because, first and foremost, the players have got to give the fans something to shout about.”
Shearer’s quotes should go some way to pleasing the Magpies fans, who for too long have blindly supported their team with little to shout about. Regarded as one of the best fanbases in England, St James’ Park should be blistering on matchdays, but, as Shearer points out, the players need to give something back.
The support may have died down in the last few weeks, but that is because the on-pitch situation has been getting worse and worse. There is little to shout about, but the fans have done their best to stay on the side of their players.
Coloccini had no need to publish the letter, even if he felt it was necessary to ensure support was still on the side of the team. He and his teammates should start performing on the pitch if they want the fans to get back on their side, as, if they started picking up results, the fans would undoubtedly return to support the team.
