The Newcastle icon was left disappointed again, however...
That excitement, however, soon wavered when the club released an official statement regarding the position of manager John Carver.
Lee's initial hope, he says, came from the news Newcastle were to release a statement - but he was optimistic the club had finally secured their new manager.
In the event, all the Tyneside outfit had done was publicly announce they were focused on the last three games. Were they previously not going to bother...?
Lee's views, of course, sum up the feeling at Newcastle right now - and he is saddened by the way in which the Magpies are being run.
He said: "I actually got slightly excited this week when I heard Newcastle United were going to release a statement.
"I wondered whether they’d got their man as new manager and we could start feeling optimistic. But what actually came out was nothing really - and a line or two about being focused on the last three games, which you’d like to think was a given anyway!
"You don’t need to make a statement about that if you are in a relegation battle. That seems to be the way the club is run and this relegation battle has been coming, sadly."
Newcastle face West Brom this Saturday afternoon under current boss Carver and rarely has there been less hope of a club bouncing back from a run of defeats - possibly in Premier League history.
As many have speculated, a win could do wonders for the St James' Park outfit's chances of survival. But eight losses in a row suggest that's just what the Magpies won't be able to do against a disciplined Tony Pulis side.
