Richard Keys' tweet puts Newcastle United's plight into context

The football presenter has offered up a fan fact on social media.

Richard Keys has taken to Twitter with the remarkable fact that it was on this day 60 years ago that Newcastle United won their last domestic trophy.

And, in so doing, Keys has put into context just how far the St James' Park outfit have fallen since.

There have been good times, of course, with the days of Kevin Keegan, Sir Bobby Robson - and even a finish in the European places under Alan Pardew. But just look at Newcastle now.

How times have changed.

Manchester City are at the very least a top-four side, having won a Premier League and Capital One Cup double last season, while Newcastle could be facing their second relegation in the space of just a few years.

Meanwhile, boss John Carver has claimed he still believes he is the top flight's best coach. Astounding.

The Magpies face West Brom on Saturday afternoon in desperate need of something, even it's simply a performance that can give them a glimmer of hope of a point the following week.

Will Newcastle fans get what is long overdue, however, or will Carver and co deliver the same old nonsense?
