Koeman provides fitness update on four Southampton players, including Rodriguez and Schneiderlin

Southampton have a number of players who are currently ruled out through injury.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed to the club's official website that Jay Rodriguez will not be fit to play a part in their match against Leicester City this weekend.

Rodriguez has missed the whole of the season so far with a knee injury, but he has been back in training over the past week and there were hopes that he could make the match-day squad on Saturday.

However, Koeman says that Rodriguez is still not fit enough to play a part in a competitive match and he will join Emmanuel Mayuka on the sidelines, with the striker also set to be ruled out.

"Jay Rodriguez is doing the normal session with the group and so is Emmanuel Mayuka but they are still not available for the weekend," he said.

Southampton have a number of injury problems at the moment, and Morgan Schneiderlin is another player set to miss out on Saturday.

The initial prognosis of Schneiderlin's injury had suggested that he could miss the remainder of the season, but Koeman is hopeful that the Frenchman will make a return to action quicker than expected.

“Morgan is going much better but he is not close to be part of training," he said. "I mentioned last week he will be out for the whole season but he may be able to play in the last one or two. It’s positive.”

There wasn't similarly good news on Dusan Tadic, though. The Serbian is also currently on the treatment table and it seems that his return is still some way off.

Southampton need to finish the season strongly if they are to make it into the Europa League, so they will be hoping that having so many first-team stars out does not prove costly.
