Jermaine Jenas tries to make sense of John Carver’s bold claim

Newcastle United head coach John Carver made a big statement today.

Former Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas has given his take on John Carver’s bold claim on BBC Radio 5 live Sport.

Earlier today, Carver said that he thinks that he is the best coach in the Premier League.

"I still think I'm the best coach in the Premier League,” BBC Sport quotes the Englishman as saying. "If I have the right tools I can do the job. I'm doing the job to the best of my ability."

It was quite strange - and bold - of Carver to make such a big comment, especially as Newcastle are just two points above the Premier League relegation zone at the moment.

Moreover, the Magpies have lost their last eight league matches and are currently in dire form.

Jenas, who has worked with Carver in his playing career, has tried to explain just what Carver meant when he claimed that he is “the best coach in the Premier League”.

“John Carver is from the old school,” the former Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur star told BBC Radio 5 live Sport.

“When he says that he thinks that he is the best coach in the league, I don’t think that he is referring to the fact that he is the best manager in the league…

“This is his first managerial position, and he still feels like as a coach - day in and day out, on the pitch, working with the players - he is the best in the Premier League.”

Jenas’s comments make perfect sense. After all, Carver could not possibly think that he is the best manager in the Premier League.
