Former Manchester United centre back Jaap Stam has told the club's official website that Dutch winger Memphis Depay is a 'quality player'.
Depay, 21, has been a sensation for PSV Eindhoven this season, hitting 24 goals in 35 games in all competitions, drawing plenty of interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs in the process.
Yet today, Manchester United confirmed that they had agreed a deal to bring the wide man to Old Trafford this summer, pending a medical.
The Dutch international will now reunite with his former Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal, who took Depay to last summer's World Cup in Brazil, in what appears to be a perfect fit considering how United need pace and skill in the final third.
Familiar with van Gaal's methods and capable of scoring from long range, Depay looks to be the ideal signing for United - and his compatriot Stam, who starred at United after making the same move from PSV Eindhoven to Old Trafford in 1998, says United have signed a great player, who fits exactly what United want to do.
"He’s a quality player," said Stam. "United always want to attack and the club always has an interest in players that have a lot of pace and who can also play the one-vs-ones and create something or score goals. Memphis is that type of player."
"He’s proven that in Holland for a couple of seasons now and also with the national team and I think it’s a good step for him to join United now, and also work with Louis van Gaal because he knows him very well of course," he added.
United fans will of course be hoping that Stam is right, and that Depay can follow in the footsteps of Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, United's best wingers in the modern era.
