Gary Cahill v Dejan Lovren: Head to Head: Comparing the Chelsea and Liverpool defenders: 20150506

This weekend, Chelsea and Liverpool go head-to-head in a huge Premier League encounter.

While Jose Mourinho’s side may have already wrapped up the title with three games to spare, that does not mean they will be taking this match lightly, with the rivalry between the two sides fierce and ongoing.

As for Liverpool, they will have seen Manchester United’s recent poor form and know they could still qualify for next season’s Champions League, but only if they sort themselves out quickly.

Two players likely to be key for their respective sides in Sunday’s clash are Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren.

While Cahill has been a regular for the Blues this season, Lovren has had a hit-and-miss start to life at Anfield, and only the absence of Mamadou Sakho has seen him given a chance to show what he can do on a consistent basis. But how do the two rival players compare in the league this season?

As you can see from the statistics above, the Chelsea defender just pips Lovren when it comes to passing accuracy while he also averages more outfield blocks per appearance.

But those areas aside, it is the Liverpool man who outshines his rival in all the other defensive stats above.

The summer signing from Southampton averages more effective clearances (both with his feet and with his head), more successful duels, more aerial battles, more tackles and more interceptions.

It was Cahill who had the last laugh of course, winning the league title, but Lovren has not been as bad as some have suggested, at least in contrast with the Chelsea star.
