Ex-Arsenal prospect Afobe's 32 goal season makes him top scorer in entire country

Benik Afobe

No player has scored more goals this season than the Wolves striker, who was given a special award by Puma at the club's end of season event to recognise his achievements.

Arsenal may look back at this season, and consider their sale of Benik Afobe as one of their biggest mistakes of the year.

Because at the moment the Londoner is set to be the top scoring player in English professional football this seasonl after stunning spells in League One and the Championship.

Only Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero are in with a shout of catching the attacker's 32-goal total, two clear of the Spurs star and Cardiff striker Eoin Doyle.

The striker, who only turned 22 in February, was in the middle of a stunning loan spell for MK Dons in League One, scoring 19 goals in 30 games across all competitions, when Arsenal surprisingly agreed to sell him to Wolves.

The England Under-21 forward made short work of the step up in class, and promptly started banging the goals in for Kenny Jackett's side. His superb record of 13 goals in the Championship in 21 games took Wolves to the brink of the playoffs, though they fell just short by finishing up in seventh place.

Afobe's league form is actually better in England's second tier that it was at the Dons, only Watford's Odion Ighalo scored more goals than the former Gunner in the Championship after his arrival at Molineux.

So, with Arsenal likely to still be seeking striker reinforcements this summer, it's astonishing that Arsene Wenger never gave him a first team opportunity, not even in the cup competitions.

If Afobe continues that form into next season, Wolves can expect a whole host of Premier League clubs to come calling.
