Commerzbank - Investment banking division on the up

Thumbs Up At Desk

Commerzbank's investment banking division saw a 40% increase in operating profit in the first quarter, driven primarily by a surge in debt and currency trading, the bank said on Thursday.

Reuters reports that market volatility in the first three months of the year led clients to increase trading activity, which drove commissions and fees higher for the investment bank, Commerzbank said in a statement.

In the meantime, Bloomberg News reports that Commerzbank is targeting a higher capital ratio after reaching its previous objective by selling shares last week.

The bank now plans to achieve a common equity Tier 1 ratio, a measure of financial strength, of 'significantly more' than 10 percent by the end of 2015, by generating capital through profit, Commerzbank said Thursday. The bank’s previous target was for more than 10 percent by 2016.
