Celtic could bring in a wonderful young talent on loan if Manchester United were prepared to do business.
Celtic manager Ronny Deila has shown this season that he is not afraid to put his faith in young players, with both Jason Denayer and Nir Bitton excelling as a result.
Others have also tasted first-team action and the likes of Liam Henderson, Darnell Fisher and Kieran Tierney will be hoping to push on next season; but what about potential new arrivals?
After all, if Denayer heads backs to his parent-club Manchester City or completes a loan move elsewhere, the Celtic manager will have a pretty sizeable hole to fill. And even if the Belgian teenager does remain with the Bhoys for another season, they will need reinforcements as they look for a sustained challenge in Europe and a potential treble that only just eluded them this year.
One player who could be a perfect short-term option at Celtic Park is Manchester United’s Dutch defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
He may only be 17, but the former Ajax youth product has already made a significant impact at Old Trafford at youth level and his talent is such that he looks destined to be a great player given time.
Fosu-Mensah may be a centre-back by trade, but he can also play as a defensive midfielder and it is in that second position that he has really started to excel at United.
He has a long way to go, but it is telling that Louis van Gaal – who knows Dutch football inside-out – made the teenager one of his first signings after taking over at United.
And if the time is deemed right to send Fosu-Mensah out on loan next season, there are few managers who can be trusted with youth prospects better than Celtic’s Deila.
As another option in defence and as a back-up for Nir Bitton follow up the field, the United teenager could get some much-needed first-team experience under his belt.
He could also offer Celtic something that has to be seen to be believed; because despite his tender age, Fosu-Mensah is already showing glimpses of being a wonderful talent.
