Cleverly has been playing on loan from Manchester United and Sherwood has said there’s no point discussing whether he’ll make a permanent move to Villa Park until the club’s Premier League safety has been secured.
“I’ve told him. Tom’s got a decision to make and we’re willing to wait until the end of the season for that,” he said.
“We’ve got a lot of hard work to be done like making sure we are safe first or it won’t be up for discussion.”
“He’ll have a lot of options in the Premier League. He’s not going to want to join a team in the Championship.”
Cleverley has been doing a tidy job in Aston Villa’s midfield and he complements the other players across the middle of the team nicely.
He’s a simple player who always looks for the simple option rather than trying anything over complicated and his fitness means he can always put in a good shift in terms of his work rate.
It could well be a no brainer as far as Sherwood is concerned, but he’s right to suggest that Premier League safety needs to be secured first.
Dropping out of the Premier League and into the Championship completely changes the face of things for Aston Villa and the calibre of players they can go after in terms of permanent deals this summer.
If Villa get over the line and stay up, Cleverley signing could be one of the first deals that Sherwood looks to complete.
