The young defender has been scouted by Everton and Newcastle ahead of a potential summer transfer.
The Premier League duo have been scouting the 18-year-old for a number of months, and he looks to be well on the way to a promising career, having already made four appearances for Gijon’s senior team - despite his young age.
He is a regular in Gijon’s reserve side, and this term he has made 28 appearances, scoring three goals.
As well as his reputation at club level, Mere has been capped at youth level for Spain at every level from Under-17 upwards, and he made his Under-21 debut in March 2015 - an incredible achievement for someone so young.
Both interested clubs will have a tough task to sign the right-footed defender, with his contract at Gijon signed until 2019. The Segunda Division club are in no rush to sell their prize asset, and with such a long contract guaranteed they hold all the cards over asking price and a potential sale.
There is no indication as to a price that Everton or Newcastle would have to pay to secure the highly-rated youngster, but it is stated in the report that the Toffees are at the forefront of the race for his signature.
