Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen included in Barcelona’s squad for Bayern Munich clash

Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is in line to make his debut for Barcelona against Bayern Munich in the Champions League tonight.

Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen could finally make his debut for Barcelona tonight.

The Belgium international has been included in the Spanish giants’ 18-man squad for tonight’s Champions League semi-final first-leg tie against Bayern Munich at Camp Nou.

An Achilles injury to Jeremy Mathieu saw the Frenchman ruled out of tonight’s contest, and coach Luis Enrique has drafted Vermaelen into his matchday squad.

The 29-year-old moved to Barcelona from Premier League outfit Arsenal in the summer of 2014, but his time in Spain has been plagued by injuries.

Vermaelen underwent hip surgery in December, and it seems that he is now finally fit enough to play.

Once suspects that Enrique will not include the former Ajax star in the starting line-up for such a big game, and perhaps the Belgium will not even come on as a substitute (unless there is an emergency, of course).

However, this will still be good news for Vermaelen, who suffered with injury problems in his last season at Arsenal.
