A former Liverpool great has been having his say on one of the club's current young stars.
Predicting who would win the club’s Player of the Season award later this month, Fowler looked no further than Philippe Coutinho.
The Brazilian international has enjoyed a good campaign, his talent and contribution blossoming at an impressive rate.
In 49 goals this season Coutinho has scored eight goals and provided six assists, and while those statistics are not as spectacular as some, he has scored some absolute beauties and hinted at better things to come.
At just 22, there is no doubt the Liverpool play-maker is a superstar-in-the-making, and Fowler clearly enjoyed watching him on the field.
“I’d be surprised if he didn’t win it,” Gerrard said. “He puts the ball into certain positions where you think it is impossible at times, and some of his footwork in creating space for himself is a joy to watch.
“It’s a match made in heaven for any player who plays up front for Liverpool when you’ve got a player that talented behind you.”
The problem for Liverpool this season is that with Daniel Sturridge absent for much of the campaign, those tasked with replacing have not been able to benefit from Coutinho’s vision.
Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have all failed to score the requisite number of goals to ensure Liverpool ended the season with some silverware. But with the right additions this summer, next year could be the one when everything comes together for Brendan Rodgers’ side...and Coutinho in particular.
