According to Portuguese publication A Bola, Arsenal will battle Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, among others, for the signature of 17-year-old forward Luka Jovic.
The report states Porto are ready to offer €5 million for 50% of the player, but face strong competition from the North London duo and the reigning champions of Spain and Holland ahead of what promises to be a fiercely competitive transfer scramble.
The Serbian, who has scored five goals in 20 first-team appearances this season, has become one of the most highly sought-after players in his home nation after breaking Inter Milan legend Dejan Stankovic’s record as Red Star Belgrade’s youngest ever goalscorer.
Who is Luka Jovic and why is he so highly rated?
The 17-year-old is a Serbia under-19 international with a consistent record of scoring goals regardless of what level he is asked to play at.
He scored three goals in six appearances for Serbia’s under-16 side, four in five appearances for Serbia’s under-17 side and four in eight for the under-19 side.
If you also consider his record-breaking goal which helped Red Star lift the title and strike rate at first team level then you get a very impressive youngster who promises to one day to be one of Europe’s elite.
Nevertheless, the competition for his signature is very strong and both Premier League clubs – Tottenham and Arsenal – will do well to shake off the interest from the rest of the pack. If a deal does become possible, however, it would be in the both side’s best interest to get the deal over the line ahead of the competition.
