Ledley and Mariappa could both depart Selhurst Park this summer as Pardew admits he needs to assess whether they are capable of adding something to his ranks at a Premier League level.
As a result, the Palace boss is looking to cast an eye over them during the remaining fixtures of the season, with duo now under pressure to impress.
“I need to make some decisions on futures. (Adrian) Mariappa got a game. Joe Ledley got another game in midfield," he said following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at title-winning Chelsea. “These are players that I need to see and understand if they can cope.”
Ledley and Mariappa have both struggled for appearances since Pardew took over, but would be expected to generate interest if Palace were to put them up for sale.
In previous seasons the duo have shown their class and proved that they do have the ability to compete alongside the best in the business - even if Pardew is unsure as to their value at Palace.
Pardew's mentality over their future is encouraging for Eagles fans, though, as it shows just how far the 53-year-old believes he can take the side.
In years gone by, Palace would have been unlikely to consider offers for Ledley and Mariappa, but expectations are rising and there is a realisation that they have to be ruthless if they are to progress.
