Manchester United great Gary Neville says that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere should not go into all challenges.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere needs to back out of close challenges.

The former United defender made the comments following the GunnersPremier League match against Hull City away from home at the KC Stadium on Monday.

Wilshere came on in place of Wales international midfielder Aaron Ramsey in the 68th minute and gave a good account of himself in midfield.

The England international took two shots, had a pass accuracy of 90%, created one chance and attempted two dribbles.

Neville was impressed with the performance produced by the 23-year-old, but he had a word of advice for him.

“There are very few players who can do what he does in terms of picking up the ball in central midfield and beating a man,” the 40-year-old said on the Monday Night Football show while analysing Wilshere’s display against Hull.

“He has got massive character,” added Neville. “He is competitive, and the idea of backing out of something wouldn’t be in his nature, but I think that when he is on the floor, it’s those moments when you think if he is going to get injured again. I think those are the ones that he should try to stay clear if he can.”

Wilshere has a history of suffering injuries, and Neville’s advice is something that he should heed.

The 23-year-old has only just returned from a long-term injury lay-off, and he needs to make sure that he does not go into every challenges between now and the end of the season.

Wilshere is a dynamic and competitive midfielder who wants to win every ball, but for now he needs to take a step back and gradually ease into match action.
