Former Everton midfielder Ian Snodin told the Liverpool Echo the key question he’ll have if the club signs Tom Cleverley in the summer.
The Manchester United owned midfielder has been linked with a move to Goodison Park by the paper, but Snodin says he has reservations over whether he’s the man who will drive the Everton midfield forward.
“My question is this: would Everton be vastly improved with Tom Cleverley in the side? - I know I’m not alone in being undecided on Tom. And I know I won’t be the only Evertonian querying whether he is the player who can transform us into a top four team,” he said.
Cleverley has been in inspired form for Aston Villa, which is due mainly to the fresh belief, energy and confidence he has been given by the club’s new manager Tim Sherwood.
Villa are also likely to be a key player in the battle for Cleverley’s signature and have the obvious advantage of the England man having played for them in key games this season.
It would be a gamble by Everton, especially when they seem to have all angles covered in terms of central midfield players, but Roberto Martinez has previously worked with Cleverly and should know how to get the most out of him.
He’s a tidy player, who protects the ball well but whether he’s the man who can seriously challenge the likes of James McCarthy and Ross Barkley for their positions in the team is doubtful.
