With Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United drawing a blank in the Premier League last weekend, it must have been a galling sight for supporters of both clubs to see two former players combining for a superb goal elsewhere.
Yet that is exactly what happened when Seattle Sounders visited Yankee Stadium to face the newly-formed New York City franchise in Major League Soccer.
Riding high in the Eastern Conference after three wins from their previous four games, Seattle were able to call upon the twin attacking talents of Obafemi Martins and Clint Dempsey.
The pair struck up quite the partnership for the Sounders last season, and looked as sharp as ever against NYC.
One particular highlight saw Dempsey set Martins on his way towards goal with an exquisite back heel.
The Nigerian finished the chance with aplomb and Seattle went on to win 3-1 on the night, moving up to third in the Eastern Conference as a result.
Once on the books at Newcastle United and later Birmingham City, Toon fans must surely have felt a slight tinge of envy at seeing Martins score a goal of such quality.
The same may also be said of Tottenham supporters with regards to Dempsey.
Brought to White Hart Lane from Fulham, where he had starred for several seasons, Spurs fans never quite saw the best of the player nicknamed “Deuce” before he headed back to the US.
On the basis of this fine assist and goal, his and Martins' exits from the Premier League may have been a little premature.
