Bentaleb says Tottenham should have taken their chances against City

The Tottenham Hotspur star has been reflecting on their latest result against former Premier League champions Manchester City.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has been speaking to the club’s official website following Spurs' defeat to Manchester City at the weekend.

Tottenham lost 1-0 with Sergio Aguero scoring the only goal of the game shortly before the half-hour mark.

It was a result that all but ended Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League and midfielder Bentaleb has been reflecting on what his side should have done against Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

“It was a difficult game; we persevered really well and we deserved better than a defeat,” the Algerian international said.

“We should have taken our chances before their goal but we didn’t and we have to use that as a lesson now.”

Tottenham had 21 goal attempts in total but only five of those were on target. In contrast City had 15 attempts, four of which tested or beat Spurs ‘keeper Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham have a poor record against the sides above them in the table this season and that is something manager Mauricio Pochettino will want to work on in the months ahead to ensure they improve in the next campaign.

There is no doubt Spurs have a promising young side, but they must learn from their mistakes this year, and also add sufficient quality to ensure this was the start of something better and not simply a sign of things to come.
