Reported West Ham managerial candidate’s agent gives update on contract situation

Rafa Benitez

Former Liverpool and Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez is reportedly a candidate for the West Ham United job.

Rafael Benitez’s agent has told Calciomercato.com that there is a possibility that the former Liverpool manager will sign a new contract with Napoli.

Benitez’s current contract with the Italian club runs out at the end of the season, and no new deal is in place.

However, the former Chelsea interim manager’s agent, Manuel Garcia Quillon, has suggested that the 55-year-old could put pen to paper on a new deal with the Serie A outfit.

“There is a chance,” Quillon told Calciomercato.com when asked if Benitez will sign a new deal. “At the moment, there is no update on the contractual situation of Benitez.”

What does this mean for West Ham United?

According to The Mirror, Benitez is on the shortlist of managerial candidates for West Ham United.

Sam Allardyce is out of contract at the Premier League club at the end of the season, and no new deal is in place.

However, Quillon’s suggestion that Benitez could remain in Naples next season means that West Ham will have to look elsehere, if indeed they are not interested in having Allardyce in charge next season.

Benitez would be a good fit for West Ham. The former Valencia coach has worked in English football before and knows how the Premier League works.

With West Ham looking to play European football in the coming years, Benitez’s experience and success in that area would also be a welcome addition.
