Jamie Carragher: Santi Cazorla was outstanding, but I still have my doubts

Jamie Carragher says Santi Cazorla may not be the long-term answer for Arsenal in midfield.

Jamie Carragher has told SkySports he is unconvinced Santi Cazorla is a long term answer for Arsenal in central midfield.

The former Liverpool defender made the remarks despite admitting the Spaniard was 'outstanding' in the 3-1 victory over Hull City.

Cazorla played in a deep role alongside Francis Coquelin, allowing Aaron Ramsey greater license to get forward alongside Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez behind striker Olivier Giroud.

He said: "I'd have never said he was a central midfielder, more of a wide player.

"Will Arsenal go and win the title with Cazorla in central midfield? I'm not sure, over the course of a season.

"You could argue Fabregas, but he's more of a central midfielder. It's a position I thought he'd never take up. He was outstanding tonight."

Cazorla played in the same role in the away win over Monaco, moving deeper in order to accommodate Mesut Ozil centrally in attack.

It's a balancing act for Arsene Wenger, but if Francis Coquelin can keep up his dominant displays in defensive midfield then Cazorla may have a chance.

Cazorla made one tackle and two interceptions, but from an attacking perspective he stood out. He made 106 passes, completing 94 per cent of them, and created four chances.

Over the course of the season there would probably be games where there is a dip in form, but this is true of all players. The positives Cazorla brings would certainly outweigh the negatives, and Carragher casting doubt on his ability to excel in the role is a little harsh right after a game where he really did just that.
