Report: Newcastle want McClaren within 24 hours - the perfect move?

Steve McClaren

The Derby manager is reportedly wanted immediately at Newcastle.

According to the Sunday People, Newcastle United want Derby County boss Steve McClaren to replace John Carver within the next 24 hours.

Carver has made a royal mess of his duties as Newcastle head coach, with the inexperienced coach clearly appointed on the assumption he couldn't be bad enough to relegate the Magpies with the club on a sufficient number of points with so many games to go.

But the 50-year-old has proven completely inept in his role at St James' Park and the People suggest Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has had enough.

Derby head coach McClaren has been linked with a move to Tyneside for some months now and the Rams' failure to make the play-offs could prove the catalyst for him to finally make the move.

And it may be the perfect move. Indeed, many Derby fans have grown tired of McClaren's reign at the iPro Stadium, with the former England boss deemed to have had his head turned by Newcastle to the effect that it has badly affected his performance.

The Magpies, meanwhile, will likely lose their final three games under Carver. There are no two ways about it.

That may see them relegated, meaning huge financial losses for the Tyneside outfit - something the appointment of Carver was likely centred around: saving money.

Newcastle will have already lost a huge amount in terms of Premier League bonus money, so spending on compensation for the Derby boss will be worth it even if it injects the slightest bit of coaching pedigree into the Newcastle dugout during this vital run-in.
