This is the player Celtic should be pulling out all the stops to sign this summer.
With John Guidetti likely to leave Celtic Park this summer, a move for another effective marksman would make sense despite the presence of the in-form Leigh Griffiths.
At 23, and with a contract that expires in the summer of 2016, a Ciftci bid would make sense for Celtic. But there is an interesting alternative, even if it would take an almighty effort to pull it off.
At 27, Aberdeen’s Adam Rooney is not a player who would be willing to play second fiddle to Griffiths. But with his ability to play as a centre-forward, a secondary striker and a left winger, he would surely feature regularly were he to move to Celtic.
He is also a fine goal-scorer, as his 27 efforts this season testify; a record which compares favourably with Ciftci’s return of 14 goals in 37 appearances.
Of course, Aberdeen will not want to part with Rooney, and with a contract until the summer of 2018 there is no reason for them to entertain any bid that may come their way. But the simple fact is there are some highly effective alternatives to Ciftci if Celtic want to push for a front-man who can also play in other positions.
One thing is certain: It will be an interesting summer for Celtic manager Ronny Deila in his attempts to build on an already impressive squad.
