Benteke's first-half brace helped Tim Sherwood's men beat the Toffees 3-2 at Villa Park.
Attacking duo Christian Benteke and Jack Grealish had reason to celebrate on Saturday after helping Aston Villa move a step closer towards Premier League survival with a 3-2 home victory over Everton.
The Toffees arrived at Villa Park on a five-game unbeaten run but a Benteke brace and Tom Cleverley goal saw Tim Sherwood’s side climb up to 14th in the table with three games left.
Benteke’s 10th-minute header from new captain Fabain Delph’s cross gave Villa the lead, before the Belgian grabbed his 12th goal in 11 games on the stroke of half-time following Grealish’s dangerous corner.
Everton pulled one back just before the hour through Romelu Lukaku’s spot-kick, earned after Ron Vlaar brought down Steven Naismith in the area, but Manchester United loanee Cleverley restored the home side’s two-goal advantage five minutes later with his second goal in two games.
Phil Jagielka’s stoppage-time header set up a tense finish but Villa held on for a crucial win which keeps them two points above the drop zone.
Things are still in the balance, with games against West Ham United, Southampton and relegation rivals Burnley to come but, with how Sherwood has them playing of late, the momentum looks there for a strong finish.
What’s more, the squad themselves seem to be filled with all the confidence in the world at the moment, as the Twitter reactions of both Benteke and Grealish highlighted after the match.
