The Derby County boss was in a rut as they missed out on the play-offs.
One of the most iconic images of Steve McClaren's career is the one of him under an umbrella at Wembley, when England failed to qualify for the European Championships.
Sadly for Derby County fans, the only images of McClaren on Saturday afternoon were all too similar.
Once again, the Derby boss has missed out on qualifying for the play-offs...
Many have blamed injuries for the side's dip in form but there seemed to be a sense - especially after such a lethargic performance when Derby needed a strong display most - that there has been a lack of leadership during these last few months.
Television presenter Richard Keys, meanwhile, summed Derby County's situation up as 'desperate' on Twitter.
Derby have been in the top 6 since the end of Sept. 2 wins from 13 now. What a desperate end to the season.— Richard Keys (@richardajkeys) May 2, 2015
Where next for Derby? Is McClaren the right man for the Rams?
He still has plenty of supporters at the iPro Stadium but, at the same time, many have grown tired after a few months where the manager's links with the Newcastle United job have seemingly distracted him.
