Report: Barca target Herrera, and it's no surprise given impressive stats

The Manchester United midfielder has been growing into his role since joining from La Liga in the summer.

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona are eyeing up several Manchester United stars ahead of the summer, with improving maestro Ander Herrera among them.

Sport publication, according to the Mirror, suggested that Barca were weighing up an emphatic swoop on four of Manchester's classiest operators, with United trio Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata all on their radar along with Man City playmaker David Silva.

While three of the names mentioned are somewhat unlikely to be interesting Barcelona, given their surplus of talents in the attacking midfield and forward positions, it isn't a surprise to hear that former Bilbao star Herrera is someone they might be keeping an eye on.

With Xabi possibly departing the Nou Camp this summer, and even Andres Iniesta turning 31 later this month, the Catalonian giants are sure to be very much on the look out for cultured central midfield players who are superb in possession and capable of intricate passing play.

It is Herrera's debut season in the Premier League after a big money move from Athletic Bilbao last year, and the former Under-21 international has improved as the season has gone on, playing a starring role in United's recent impressive run. The 25-year-old scored two in the win over Aston Villa, and also assisted Juan Mata in the Liverpool win.

His passing accuracy, number of passes and touches per game are all up since the turn of the year, highlighting his  rising influence.

Even more importantly for United, is how he has brought the best out of Mata, functioning in a midfield pair that also utilises Michael Carrick superbly. Though Carrick isn't a spring chicken anymore, the way the more defensive midfielders have worked together, providing a platform for United to attack as efficiently as they have all season, hints at a potentially title-challenging partnership.

Given this fact, it is unlikely United will entertain any interest in their improving midfield star.
